Wamagata Road, part of a township called Woodley Estate, was a thin, rutted strip of tarmac little more than three hundred feet from end to end. It served two dozen or so detached, single-storey houses, each fenced and hedged in from its surroundings. t peter out here; it simply stopped. Wamagata Road was the border. The end of the street, where our house occupied its quarter-acre enclave, faced on to a patch of waste ground, across which lay the slums of Kibera ? a shanty town of more than half a million souls.

What happened?? My techniques were diverse and unpredictable, but I did favour two particular gambits: disappearing, and falling into things. Strictly speaking, falling into things was just another way of disappearing, which was my true forte. Sometimes I disappeared on purpose, sometimes I just disappeared. This fine distinction meant little to my parents, who, to their credit, always tried to find me. t have got far,? they would reassure each other, although experience had taught them otherwise.

The fact that all the adults around me kept saying that everything would be all right was of little assurance. d heard the same thing from the nurses when I begged to be spared my injections while convalescing from meningitis. Just this one,? they would promise cheerfully each time. t have to have any more.? That went on for a month. t notice when my arm was being skewered every morning and night? t dead. Once again, the hospital became the nexus of our family life. Now it was she who lay on the ward, her legs so badly injured that surgeons were obliged to remove portions of her knees, and I who came to visit.
