So if I occasionally feel a little down, I have other people around me who can carry the ball in terms of what we have to get done that day or that week. It’s hard for me not to be there when I am the head of a project. I have to snap out of it if I’m not feeling creative. Two things are going on. I am convinced that the intuitive development of a piece happens mostly in the unconscious mind. But the control – the aesthetic and thematic control of how you make this dramatically effective – that demands an awful lot of conscious work. So the unconscious and the conscious are both working feverishly together in a thing like this. I very seldom know what generates a play in my head. Because obviously, whatever it is has sunk into the unconscious, which is far more organized than my conscious mind.
It was a great project that required getting permission to hang the Chandeliers over the canals. We ultimately did it without permission, and they didn’t seem to care. I just love Venice. But the famous Murano, once the predominant source of fine glassmaking, is probably a quarter of what it was years ago and it is still going down. It’s kind of sad. The fact is that there aren’t a lot of great glassblowers anymore. The young people don’t want to blow glass. They want to go to college and make more money.
