I X" t ! s) siles which for (1) depends only on the empirical distribution of the number of neighbours of each site of the same colour. However, this distribution is not directly observable from Z. Veijanen's SPLEMD procedure works in two steps. First the sufficient statistic b is estimated from Z by a method not involving (3. Then the MRF X is simulated conditional on b, and the pseudo-likelihood estimator from X is used to estimate (3. As we saw in §l, the simulation can be done by an iterative scheme.

Ve feel very strongly that it should be in the latter order of magnitude. Since Vu is an ancillary statistic, use of Lemma 1 (for any simulation size) technically violates the Principle of Ancillarity. The simulation size should be chosen to insure that this violation is of a trivial nature (for analogy, rounding data is a trivial violation of the Likelihood Principle). The "actual" error rate one obtains using Lemma 1 (the conditional error probability, given the simulation) is a random variable.

The other difficulty is that there must be a single test statistic T. Many useful goodness-of-fit tests produce a curve to be compared with a theoretical curve (as does the graphical form of the Kolmogorov test). In particular, my k statistic for second-moment characteristics of spatial point patterns (Ripley 1977) allows the comparison of fit at each interpoint distance. Such batteries of simultaneous tests are now widely used (Ripley, 1981; Diggle, 1983) and have proven useful despite qualms about their imprecise statistical properties.
