Extinct species Three endemic species are generally accepted to have become extinct since being collected by western explorers in the late 1800s or early 1900s: Choiseul Pigeon, Thick-billed Ground Dove and Tanna Ground Dove. These lived on the ground and were probably exterminated by cats or dogs. Other species such as New Caledonian Rail, New Caledonian Lorikeet, New Caledonian Nightjar and New Caledonian Owlet-nightjar are likely to have become extinct, but there is some hope that they survive and they are still formally listed as threatened.
