The little cells of land called dipartements, for example, each with a central town called a chef-lieu that could be reached within a single day from its outer limits by anybody, peasant or bourgeois or nobleman, riding a horse. These clear spatial images are already becoming blurred, or at least less useful, with the onset of new rapid means of communication, and this process will merely be further emphasised by the opening of the Tunnel.
