Structure of Vanadylporphyrins Present in Petroleum TRACE ELEMENTS IN PETROLEUM 35 Personal judgment, as well as skill and sampling experience, have been recognized to play an important role in the process of obtaining a representative sample (23). However the contamin&tion introduced by piping, transport&tion, storage, sampling and aging or weathering of petroleum and petroleum products has not been studied in detail yet.

J PPm has been obtained by optimizing the geometrical conditions for activation and counting, using a 24 '):lg source ('32). However, this system does not appear to be suitable for large scale analytical projects. An on-line system, us-ing a 660 [lg source has also been proposed to monitor the vanadium level in different process products (33) • MODERN TRENDS AND APPLICATIONS In 1972 an intercompany project was initiated between five U. S. petroleum companies' to develop techniques for measuring trace concentration of metals in crudes (26).

FILBY RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Table 3 shows the trace element composition of MCMurray Formation oil sand as determined by INAA. It should be noted that the composition reflects a typical sandstone containing minor amounts of clay minerals and other accessory minerals. Table 4 shows elemental data for 24 elements in the raw tar sand, the toluene extracted bitumen and the methanol-acetone extracts. 7% (mean of 24 determinations respectively). Because the weight yields of the extraction procedures were measured by difference (wt of raw oil sand - wt extracted sand), the yields have not been corrected for the water content of the tar sand (in this particular sample, <5% by weight).
