My life, which I had not yet lived, clung to those oaks and hickories—my life, my parents’, brothers’, everybody’s lives— clung to green twigs while the wind was claiming us, though only I, I thought, only I saw it and I kept silent. . But I was not the wind, or the leaves wholly, riding without knowing what it was, the in-breath or out-breath of the Lord, and as I stood beneath them, listening, the leaves sang, dying, Don’t die, and I’ve obeyed them. It’s a general rule that when the leaves start singing the reader should look for the emergency exit.

Critics often mean well when they start; but Berryman said of Jarrell, when he was safely dead, that “it didn’t occur to him that . . ” I’ve been accused of cruelty myself; yet, if a critic had to approach every book worrying about the feelings of the author, he might as well borrow a dog collar and get on with pastoral care. The critic is the enemy of the author’s fantasies; and the poet hardly exists who doesn’t think himself cock of the walk, an emperor with clothes, deserving to be bemedaled until he can scarcely stand upright.

Some of these poems stump me—I can’t imagine why anyone would write them (that’s the way I feel about Auden’s early work). You never know what you’ll find when you turn the page, and it’s scary. Deborah Garrison Deborah Garrison’s A Working Girl Can’t Win arrived in a glaring arc light of publicity—a review in Time and a full-page photograph in the New Yorker, where she works. With much current poetry reduced to minor domestic trauma, you can see the appeal of work- 42 Verse Chronicle: Sins and Sensibility ing life, even if the life is spent moaning in Manhattan coffee bars.
